Core Philosophy of Jainism
Jainism is a path of spiritual enlightenment that emphasizes non-violence, truth, and self-discipline.
It teaches that liberation is achieved through right knowledge, right faith, and right conduct.
Ahimsa (Non-Violence)
Ahimsa is the most fundamental principle of Jainism. It extends beyond physical violence to include
thoughts and speech, ensuring complete compassion for all living beings.
- Refrain from harming any living being, including insects and microbes.
- Promotes strict vegetarianism and veganism.
- Encourages peaceful resolution of conflicts and non-aggression.
Anekantavada (Multiple Viewpoints)
Anekantavada means "many-sided reality." It teaches that truth is complex and can be viewed from different perspectives.
No single viewpoint can capture the entire truth.
- Encourages tolerance for different beliefs.
- Discourages dogmatism and absolute statements.
- Forms the basis of Jain logic and philosophy.
Aparigraha (Non-Possessiveness)
Aparigraha teaches detachment from material possessions and worldly desires. It leads to inner peace and spiritual growth.
- Minimizes material desires and attachments.
- Promotes a simple, ethical lifestyle.
- Encourages sharing and generosity.
The Three Jewels of Jainism
Jainism defines the path to liberation through the Three Jewels:
- Right Faith (Samyak Darshan) - Believing in the truth of Jain teachings.
- Right Knowledge (Samyak Jnana) - Gaining an accurate understanding of reality.
- Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra) - Practicing non-violence, truthfulness, and detachment.
Karma and Liberation (Moksha)
Jainism teaches that karma is a subtle form of matter that binds to the soul due to thoughts, actions, and emotions.
By purifying the soul, one can break free from karma and achieve Moksha (liberation).
- Every action influences future reincarnations.
- Good deeds purify the soul, while negative actions cause karmic bondage.
- Ultimate goal: achieving liberation and escaping the cycle of birth and death.
